Houston is like a colorful patchwork quilt of different peoples, art and culture, culinary adventure, and history. All are built on the solid foundation of its immense seaport, the energy sector, and a thriving tech industry driven by NASA’s Space Center. It’s impossible to highlight all that this cultural center of the south offers, but here are a few examples. Over 11,000 restaurants with foods from over 70 countries dot the city. Need to work up a hunger? Visit the 19 museums in the Museum District; you can walk to all of them. There are ballet, opera, symphonies and theater companies, all resident. You can even visit the famed Mission Control room at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Leave plenty of time for a Houston visit; or plan several trips. You will find new things to do each time.

There’s so much to see, consider a tour and the Houston CityPASS. Either way, you can target your visit to culture, fun, learning, and even include an amazing visit to the Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston. Space shuttle replicas, a Saturn V rocket, and moon rocks will appeal to explorers of any age. For more down to Earth interests, see the amazing zoo, tour historic homes, or visit the National Museum of Funeral History. You read that right; visitors call it a life-changing experience.

  • A great overview is the NASA Space Center Houston and City Sightseeing Tour.
  • Museums like the Funeral History Museum or The Lone Star Flight Museum offer focused subject-driven learning, while the Museum of Fine Arts house a superb collection of Impressionist paintings.

Houston offers every fun activity you can imagine. Well, maybe not skiing, but if virtual reality experiences, race car driving, golf, or escapes are on your bucket list, Houston has it covered. Plus, Houston has major professional sports teams competing in baseball, football and basketball, not to forget men’s and women’s pro soccer, and yes, women’s football, dodgeball and ultimate frisbee.

  • Get the VR goggles on at Exitus VR, or the driving helmet on at the periodic Rusty Wallace Racing Experience.
  • Escape Zombies at Room Escape Time, or “fly” indoors at iFly.

Houston is a booming metropolis, and has it all. Upscale boutiques featuring acclaimed designers, malls with specialty stores of all kinds, plus a multitude of internationally and regionally flavored shops are at your service. You can find items from Viet Nam and Cambodia as easily as antique Old West treasures like stuffed armadillos packing six-shooters!

  • Traders Village Marketplace features 1,000s of vendors in a flea market format with unique offerings from leather goods and wood carvings to Old West items like antique spurs and sherif badges.
  • Rice Village Shops offer a variety of stores, and so does The Galleria, one of the largest malls in the US.

If Houston has a signature cuisine, it might be variety. There are over 70 ethnic food types available for your dining adventures. However, Houston natives will steer you to some iconic local faves to sample fried Gulf shrimp, mesquite-smoked meats, Vietnamese crawfish, German and of course TexMex.

  • Gulf shrimp at Brennan’s or Christie’s are iconic, as are the meats and pecan pies at Goode Company BBQ.
  • Test your tastebuds at Viet-Cajun Crawfish and Noodles, or at Pho Binh by Night. Give Picos a try for pollo en mole negro Oaxaqueño, or wear your lederhosen to Rudi Lechner’s for German breaded veal and red cabbage.
